Samaritan's Purse - Interpreter for Arabic/Urdu/Farsi

Job Summary

The Arabic/ Urdu/ Farsi  Interpreter will be responsible for accurate and effective interpretation and communication between target language (Arabic/Farsi/Urdu) - speaking beneficiaries and Samaritan's Purse staff in order for the Organization to better serve the specific subset of refugees and migrants.

Key Responsibilities

• Facilitate effective communication between two parties that do not speak a similar language by converting one spoken or written language to another, mainly between the target language (Arabic/Farsi/Urdu) and English.
• Accurately convey tone and intention of the speaker to the listener.
• Translate or draft documents and signage in either language in order to correctly convey a message.
• Provide insight and context of the beneficiary culture to SP.
• Assist at transit sites with NFI distribution and WASH & Shelter allocation.
• Record, collect and maintain data for analysis. Produce timely and accurate program reports to SP and various partners.
• Uphold organizational standards while interacting with beneficiaries and liaising with other NGOs.
• All other duties deemed necessary by the Area Coordinator.
• Any other duties as assigned by the Area Coordinator.

Education / Experience Needed

Past experience in the humanitarian field working in Arabic/ Urdu/ Farsi-speaking cultures as an interpreter highly recommended. Certification in English and target language strongly recommended (eg CEFR, Cambridge, etc.). One year of college-level Biblical studies strongly preferred.

Skills Required

· Fluency in target language (Arabic/Farsi/Urdu) and English language.

· High level of reading comprehension and writing ability in target language (Arabic/Farsi/Urdu) and English.

· Knowledge of Arabic/Farsi cultures preferred.

· Ability to work well within a team and build positive team spirit.

· Ability to work under pressure in a cross-cultural environment.

· Experience working in a multi-cultural environment.

· Good communication and negotiation skills.

· Greek language ability strongly recommended

Language

Ability to read and interpret documents in English. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in English. Greek language skills strongly recommended.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form.
