Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization, based in the United States, providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ.

 

Job Summary

The WASH Program Officer will support the local WASH program which will include implementing new water and sanitation projects, ensuring the ongoing operation and maintenance of existing water and sanitation facilities and that solid waste management on site is compliant with all policies and procedures.  They will help coordinate the WASH team which could include plumbing, construction, cleaning and hygiene staff.   The WASH Officer will complete activities such as procurement of program materials and supplies, monitoring and reporting of ongoing issues and overseeing construction and other works of subcontractors.  They will report activities to the program coordinator and perform all other tasks and responsibilities assigned for the benefit of Samaritan’s Purse with a generous and serving spirit.

 

Key Responsibilities

·         Coordinate the day-to-day WASH activities across sites (may include water and wastewater management, sanitation and solid waste management, and hygiene promotion).

·         Ensure that basic WASH standards are maintained within all the sites, this includes application of SPHERE standards, the UNHCR Europe WASH strategy,  as well as other internationally recognized operational standards.

·         Maintain WASH hardware and complete minor repairs on toilets, hand washing basins, showers, trash bins, physical signage, and potentially other plumbing on site.

·         Identify the need for and to maintain small supply of tools and materials to carry out appropriate small repairs on WASH hardware.

·         Monitor and ensure normal operation of water supply, hot water, and septic tanks.

·         Monitor and ensure camp cleanliness and proper use of solid waste management facilities.

·         Repair of handicap accessible hardware and address any accessibility concerns of handicapped                      residents.

·         Coordinate with other teams for cleaning supplies, trash bin bags, chlorine for cleaning.

·         Coordinate with hygiene promoter regarding overall daily and urgent concerns of camp cleanliness and hygiene.

·         Respond compassionately to individual refugee concerns of cleanliness issues.

·         Report daily to WASH Program Coordinator overall site conditions and urgent concerns.

·         Coordinate with logistics for WASH procurement, warehousing, and delivery

·         Complete other activities as directed by the program coordinator

9.    Knowledge of computer systems and its applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook.

10.  Ability to supervise contractors and lead team members as required.

Education / Experience Needed

·         Degree or trade certificate in engineering or construction preferred.

·         Tertiary education and experience in site maintenance, and operations management.

·         Proven ability to coordinate staff, finances and project activities.

·         Previous work experience with an NGO preferred.

 

LANGUAGE

Ability to read and interpret legal and government documents and procedure manuals in English. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in English. English and Greek language skills required.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be exposed to loud noises around the maintenance and construction workshops.
  • May work in environment with exposure to communicable diseases, cold, wet and humid weather conditions.
  • Work in a security context that is fluid
